Annual Dinner on First Event Raises Record Funds for Heritage Park Renovations

The highly anticipated annual Dinner on First event has once again exceeded expectations, raising a record amount of funds for the replacement of the Heritage Park playground and Splashpad on the park's north side. This cherished gathering drew hundreds of attendees and featured a delicious meal sponsored and prepared by Dyron’s Lowcountry, entertainment, and a strong sense of community spirit.


Nathan Anderson, Executive Director of Cullman Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support. "We are incredibly grateful for the generous contributions from everyone who attended this year’s Dinner on First. The community's love for Heritage Park is evident, and the support from our sponsors has been nothing short of extraordinary. Their generosity ensures that our park will continue to be a vibrant place for families to enjoy for years to come."


Trent Lowry, President of the Cullman Parks Foundation Board, also highlighted the importance of the event. "Dinner on First has become a cornerstone event for our community, and this year’s success is a testament to our collective dedication to preserving and enhancing our parks. The funds raised will significantly impact the redevelopment of the playground and Splash pad, making them safer and more enjoyable for our children."


The Cobblestone Hotel, this year’s presenting sponsor, played a crucial role in the event’s success. President of Hotel Development, Jeremy Griesbach, remarked, "Being a part of this community and supporting Heritage Park is incredibly important to us. We are honored to have contributed to such a beloved project and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on local families."

Sherry Boatright and Barbara Whitehead Inducted into Alabama Senior Citizen's Hall of Fame

The Cullman Active Adult Center was abuzz with celebration today as two of its cherished members, Sherry Boatright and Barbara Whitehead, were inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizen's Hall of Fame. The intimate ceremony, held at their hometown activity center, honored their remarkable contributions to the community with heartfelt speeches, cake, and joyous festivities. Honoring Sherry Boatright Sherry Boatright, a beloved resident of Hanceville, Alabama, has been a beacon of inspiration at the Cullman Active Adult Center for over 18 years. As a dedicated dance instructor, she has enriched the lives of 25-30 senior citizens weekly through her classes. Her dance troupe, "The Kickers," is well-known for their spirited performances at local events, including the "Kicking Cancer in Cullman" fundraiser, which Sherry founded as a breast cancer survivor. The group also brings joy to nursing home residents with their lively performances. Reflecting on her induction, Sherry expressed, “To be selected along with the group of people that were also in this group was so overwhelming. I feel undeserving, but I am very grateful and I love what I do.” Celebrating Barbara Whitehead Barbara Whitehead, a dedicated volunteer from Cullman, has devoted over 30 years to serving older adults. Her passion for music led her to offer lessons to seniors, culminating in a weekly jam session at the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center. This gathering has become a cherished tradition, fostering community among over 100 seniors. Barbara also volunteers as a DJ for fundraising events and shares her musical talents at local nursing homes. Since 2005, she has been a pianist at Harvest Temple Church and Andrews Chapel Church. Barbara humbly shared her feelings about the honor, stating, “I love people and I love doing what I do. I’m a nobody and the fact that I have people who want to listen to me is unreal. The goal was not an award, I’m just doing what I love. I don’t feel deserving, but I’m very honored.” The induction of Sherry Boatright and Barbara Whitehead into the Alabama Senior Citizen's Hall of Fame is a testament to their unwavering dedication and the positive impact they have made in their community. Their stories inspire all who know them, and their legacy will continue to enrich the lives of many. Cullman City Council Approves Purchase of Historic Church for Future Community Theatre

In a significant move to enhance the cultural and performing arts landscape of Cullman, the City Council has approved the purchase of the historic First United Pentecostal Church building, located at the corner of 3rd Ave NE and Clark St NE, behind City Hall. This 6,000-square-foot building, with its beautiful A-frame 40' tall sanctuary, will serve as the future home for the Community Theatre as well as a venue for other civic and performing arts gatherings. Mayor Woody Jacobs highlighted the importance of this acquisition, stating, "This project not only preserves a historic downtown building but also enriches our community by providing a versatile space for cultural and civic activities, along with much-needed additional parking near Depot Park. It's an investment in our city's future." Cullman City Council Chairman Jenny Folsom expressed her enthusiasm for this project, stating, "The acquisition of this historic church marks a new chapter for Cullman's cultural development. It will be a cornerstone for the performing arts, offering a space for local talent and diverse performances." Cullman Community Theatre Member and Former Dollywood Performer, Paige Clabo, expressed excitement for this historic move, stating, "I am thrilled to have a dedicated space that not only honors the rich history of our city but also paves the way for a vibrant future in the performing arts. This theatre will be a hub for celebrating the talent and creativity of our community." "From its inception, Cullman's founding community members supported the arts, establishing venues like Kullman Hall, Ambruster's Hall, the Esther Opera House, Princess Theater, and Lyric Theatre, which hosted a variety of theatrical productions, concerts, and civic gatherings. Re-opening a new community theatre after nearly a century continues that legacy, celebrating our cultural heritage and inspiring future generations." The purchase and planned renovation of the church underscores the city's commitment to fostering the arts and providing residents with enriching cultural experiences. The Community Theatre is expected to host a wide range of performances and events, from local plays and musical productions to community meetings and educational programs.
