10 Reasons You Want Your Child Engaged in the Arts

Children naturally love to act, sing, play instruments, dance, draw, and paint. Encouraging that participation in music, drama, movement, and visual art is something most parents desire to discover and support their child's individual talents, and young children gain many benefits and disciplines from engaging in art programs of all kinds!

Here are ten great reasons to enroll your child in local arts activities:

  1. Singing, acting, and playing musical instruments has been shown to improve vocabulary and reading skills in children.
  2. Following the detailed instructions given in acting, dancing, singing, drawing, and learning an instrument improves critical thinking, listening, and reasoning skills in other school subjects, such as math, science, and reading.
  3. Young performing artists — dancers, singers, actors, and instrumentalists — learn self-control and self-discipline; they learn to be on time and wait patiently!
  4. Children engaged in a performing group like choir, band, dance, or the cast of a musical learn to get along with others in an environment of pressure to achieve their performing goals.
  5. Young performers learn to be responsible for costumes, uniforms, folders, scripts, music and/or instruments, and equipment; they become skillful in assembling and maintaining their belongings!
  6. When children practice creativity in art activities, their creative talents often emerge in projects done at school in science, math, reading and writing.
  7. Performing children learn to take care of their bodies and demonstrate good posture and endurance!
  8. Young children develop their motor skills through performing, as well as developing their memory and attention span.
  9. Children who participate in concerts, recitals, plays, or art shows gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence; they learn to encourage and praise others!
  10. Studies show that children who regularly participate in organized arts programs are less likely to drop out of high school!
