Classes, Clinics, & Activities

 

Community Garden

Dates: March – October, 2017

Times: 24/7 for working, 6pm on Tuesdays for classes

Location: Nesmith Park

Cost: $75

Cost includes a plot in the CP&R Community Garden for use in the March – October season, as well as gardening classes and group work sessions on Tuesdays at 6pm. Registration Opens February 1 at the Civic Center.

Rock Climbing Classes

Dates: March 4 – 18, August 12 – 26

Time: 10am on Saturdays

Location: Hurricane Creek Park

Cost: $75

Class will include three climbing sessions, the first on “The Slab” beginner rock face at Hurricane Creek Park, the second on more intermediate levels at the park, and the third week will include a trip TBA. Class includes all climbing material; no experience required. All ages are encouraged to participate including youth and adults. Registration opens February 1 for the spring session and July 1 for the fall session.

Group Rock Climbing

Dates: Available at any time by reservation at the Cullman Civic Center

Location: Hurricane Creek Park

Cost: $25/person for 1-4 climbers, $20/person for 5-14 climbers, $15/person for 15-25 climbers, $10/person for 25+ climbers

Reservations can be made for any group or organization to have professional guide Corey Lunsford lead rock climbing sessions at Hurricane Creek Park among the park’s various climbing routes. Rates are based on a two-hour time frame. All climbing gear is included. No climbing experience is required!

Youth Outdoor Adventure

Dates: March 25 – April 29, September 2 – October 7

Time: 9am on Saturdays

Location: Various (Includes Hurricane Creek Park, Duck River Recreation Area, and More)

Cost: $75

6-week adventure program will include rock climbing, rappelling, wilderness survival, guided hiking, zip lining, kayaking, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities. Ages 7-14 are eligible to attend. Registration opens February 1 at the Cullman Civic Center or online.

Summer Outdoor Adventure Camp

Dates: June 13 – 15, 2017

Times: 10am

Location: Hurricane Creek Park

Cost: $75

Join us for fun outdoor activities including hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, wilderness survival skills, nature scavenger hunts, camp fires, and lots of outdoor fun and games! Ages 7-14 can sign up for this camp. Registration opens May 1 at the Cullman Civic Center or online.

Open Camping Nights at Hurricane Creek Park

Dates: April 1 – October 1, 2017

Times: First Friday of each month at 6pm

Location: Hurricane Creek Park

Cost: $5 per night per camper (must obtain permit at park office when coming into the park)

Primitive camping will be available at Hurricane Creek Park on Fridays beginning at 6pm. This is the only night camping is allowed in the park. Usage of the fire ring located at the picnic area will be allowed for paying campers only. Campers without a permit or camping on other nights than the designated time will be asked to leave and charged a fine.

Group Camping

Dates: Available at any time by reservation at the Cullman Civic Center

Times: Any

Location: Hurricane Creek Park

Cost: Call for rates

Bring your church group, scout troop, or other organizations to camp out at Hurricane Creek Park! Campers without a permit or camping on other nights than the designated time will be asked to leave and charged a fine.

Beginner Kayaking Classes

Dates: March 14 – 28, 2017

Time: 7pm on Tuesdays

Location: Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center

Cost: $90

Class focuses on paddle strokes, safety, and rolling for whitewater kayaking in the indoor pool. Class will end with a trip down a Class I-III river. Boats and all gear will be provided. Registration opens February 1 at the Cullman Civic Center or Online.

Intermediate Kayaking Classes

Dates: March 11 – 18, 2017

Times: 9am on Saturdays

Location: Mulberry River or Locust Fork River

Cost: $90 to use CP&R boat/gear, $70 with your own boat/gear

Class focuses on river running skills, rolling in white water situations, eddying, and getting other hands-on experience in the river. Must have an active roll in the pool to attend. Registration opens February 1 at the Cullman Civic Center or online.

Kayaking Trip Down the Nantahala River

Dates: August 5 – 6, 2017

Times: 9am

Location: Depart from Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center

Cost: $35

Overnight trip includes guided tour down the Nantahala River by parks and recreation kayaking instructors as well as overnight stay in campgrounds. Transportation will be provided to transport kayaks and gear, but boaters are responsible for their own travel arrangements or carpooling. Registration opens June 15 at the Cullman Civic Center or online.

Family Camp-Out

Dates: June 9, 2017

Times: 7pm-7am

Location: Heritage Park

Cost: $25 per family (immediate family only)

Activities will include family versus family competitions, cookout, marshmallow roast, scavenger hunt, story time, and other fun games. Ages 15 & under and their parents can register. Registration opens May 1 at the Cullman Civic Center or online.

 

CP&R Trails

CP&R hiking and biking trails are free for all to use year-round from sunrise to sunset daily.

 

Hiking Trails

Hurricane Creek Park

4 miles of hiking trails in a 400 feet deep canyon with waterfalls, overhanging cliffs, the Twilight Tunnel, Heaven’s Staircase, and more classic features. The park offers 67 protected acres of National Wildlife Certified habitats.

 

Hiking & Mountain Biking Trails

Duck River Recreation Area

13.5 miles of opened trail use along the newly formed Duck River Reservoir. This trail offers lots of natural beauty for both hiking and mountain biking.
